What is TGL Golf?

What is TGL Golf?

TGL is the ‘tech-infused’ golf league that is currently being spearheaded by golf superstars Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, in partnership with the PGA Tour.

Suggested to begin in January 2024, the TGL games are proposed to take place on Monday nights, creating a new regular fixture for golf fans.

While further details are yet to be announced, what do we know so far?

How will the TGL work?

TGL will feature 18 PGA Tour players, split into 6 teams of 3.

These teams will play each other head-to-head once a week, in a league-style format recognisable to sports fans, over the course of 15 weeks. These 15 weeks will form one season.

Each team will play in 5 matches at a rate of one fixture per week.

Matches are expected to last around 2 hours and will focus on an 18-hole fast-paced game.

At the end of the regular season, there will be semi-finals and then a final to crown a winning team.

The hope for the TGL is that it will be received enthusiastically and generate a raucous atmosphere in the arena, making it exciting for fans and creating a good atmosphere for players.

How will the TGL stadium function?

The action will take place in a huge virtual golf course in a custom-built arena.

PGA tour players will play their drives into a screen the size of a standard cinema screen, while short shots will be played greenside, so the fans can see better.

The focus on fans sitting greenside and the engaging atmosphere is hoped by McIlroy and Woods to be akin to that of an NBA basketball game, which will hopefully bring in a younger, more enthusiastic fan base.

TGL has been designed to complement the PGA tour, rather than detract from it, which should ensure the popularity of traditional golf continues. It also means that fans who do not enjoy the TGL can avoid it altogether with no impact on current golf championships.

What are the benefits of the TGL?

Although it will be disliked by some, this splinter league may hold real benefits for fans and the sport overall.

These include:

·         The chance to see incredible athletes at an increased frequency.

·         The focus on the fan experience and atmosphere in the arena should make it exciting to watch.

·         It could fill the Monday night football slot once the NFL season ends, giving NFL fans something else to watch.

·         The tech elements of the game and fast-paced format could attract a new variety of fans, expanding golf’s appeal.

·         By watching games on the tv, fans will not have to travel to games, making it much more accessible.

·         Games will not be cancelled by poor weather.

While it is unlikely to be popular with everyone and raises direct competition with Saudi-backed LIV Golf, it is certainly exciting to see how the TGL could use technology and broaden the appeal of golf to bring in thousands of new fans and players in just a few years.
