Where is the 2025 Ryder Cup?

As the 2023 Ryder Cup begins to fade from our rearview mirror, golf enthusiasts' thoughts have well and truly turned to the upcoming 2025 challenge.

Can America end the 4-year drought and regain Ryder Cup victory?

We’ll have to wait and see – but here is everything we do know about the 2025 Ryder Cup.

Where will the next Ryder Cup be held?

The next Ryder Cup will be held at Bethpage Black just outside Long Island, New York, and could prove to be a more intense affair than anyone expected.

As the only New York course to host a Ryder Cup, it’s notoriously tricky, described by a selection of players and journalists alike as the Bethpage Black Beast.

Recommended only for highly skilled golfers, this public Tillinghast course has been difficult enough to host the following notable golf championships:

·         The 2002 U.S. Open

·         The 2009 U.S. Open

·         The 2012 Barclays tournament - part of the FedEx Cup playoffs

·         The 2016 Barclays tournament

·         The 2019 PGA Championship

All despite being a municipal public course.

Once named one of the toughest golf courses in America by Golf Digest, there are five courses to choose from at Bethpage, in descending order of trickiness:

1.       The Black Course

2.       The Red Course

3.       The Blue Course

4.       The Green Course

5.       The Yellow Course

The infamous Black course itself will host the 2025 Ryder Cup, challenging the best to either maintain or regain their victory!

Can America claw it back in the 2025 Ryder Cup?

Finishing the weekend on a score of Europe 16.5 – 11.5 USA, can America change this next time?

Or will a mix of new leadership and home advantage make snatching victory on home turf as easy as pecan pie?

New leadership

Maybe all it will take is the right captain.

With multiple names being put forward by golf correspondents and fans - including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and even Stewart Cink - an American victory could be as simple as restaffing.

Phil Mickelson looked set to be the favourite – after playing in 12 Ryder Cup matches and serving as assistant captain under Steve Stricker at Whistling Straits, but given current events, this now seems unlikely.

Even if a peace deal can be forged between the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour, and LIV Golf, Mickelson’s recent antics, a so-called self-implosion, may mean nobody wants him as captain anyway.

Tiger Woods could then be the next best logical choice for American captaincy.

After a stratospheric career that includes winning the US Open at Bethpage in 2002, playing in 8 Ryder Cups and performing leadership duties at Hazeltine in 2016 – the golf legend seems a much safer choice than Mickelson.

That is until you consider his ongoing struggles with his health – thanks to injuries obtained from his car crash in February 2021.

Perhaps, then, the captaincy will fall to a golfing star who acted as a deputy to Zach Johnson in Rome – namely Stewart Cink, Fred Couples, or Jim Furyk.

Home advantage

The difference a home advantage can make should be overlooked with caution.

Reinforced by the Rome Ryder Cup this year, the Americans seem unable to win in Europe – with their last victory going as far back as 1993 at The Belfry in Warwickshire.

As Zach Johnson himself stated just before the Rome challenge, “It's hard to win outside of your comfort zone.”

But when at home, in New York of all places, the tables could well and truly turn.

Imagine the prospect of 50,000 partisan New Yorkers cheering on the Americans as they try to snatch back the cup from the European visitors. Bold, brash, and desperate for home success – it’s sure to be a noisy and exhilarating showdown.
